The Top Chords Window

When the Chord Grid has too many chords to choose from, the Top Chords window (or just Tops for short) gives you just a few common chords which are likely to sound good. You can open the Top Chords window via the Chord > Top Chords menu command.

The chord buttons in the Top Chords window work the same way as the buttons in the Chord Grid: right-click just plays the chord, left-click places the chord in your song.

The chords in the Top Chords window change depending on your song's contents:

  • When your song is empty, the Top Chords window shows you the most common chords to start your song.
  • Once your song has chords, the Top Chords window guesses what key your song is in and shows you the chords that work well in that key. For example, if the first chord in your song is Dm, then the Top Chords window shows you chords that work well in the key of D minor.

The Top Chords window orders its chords roughly from most common to less common.
